Max R. Wineberg Jr, 75, of New Oxford, passed away Tuesday, December 11, 2012, at Golden Living Center in Gettysburg. Born May 28, 1937 at St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore, MD, he was the son of the late Max R. Wineberg Sr. and Mary J. (Miller) Wineberg.
He is survived by two sons, Michael S. Wineberg and his wife Sharon of New Oxford and Mark L. Wineberg and his wife Susan of Gettysburg; six grandchildren, Nicholas, Megan, Katelyn, Alison, Corrina and Madison Wineberg; two step grandchildren, Katelyn and Kelsey Grace; a sister, Barbara J. Muller and her husband Hobart of East Berlin; a brother, Alan R. Wineberg of Florida; and a special cousin, Darlene Miller and her husband Steven of Spring Grove.
During highschool he belonged to GOC....Ground Observer Corps. People who would stand out and watch for enemy planes bearing nuclear bombs. The watch tower was on Berlin Road, New Oxford, PA.
Max left home at 18 and moved to Oregon and then Alaska where he worked on an oil exploration surveying crew. He returned to PA and enlisted in the US Army in 1959. While in the Army, he served in Germany during the Berlin Crisis and at Ft Lee, VA. Max was an outstanding marksman and while at Ft. Lee, he competed in match shooting competitions as a member of the rifle team and won numerous trophies. Upon his discharge from the army, Max worked as an independent trucker hauling Boston Whaler boats and steel throughout the US. In later years he also worked as a farmer and in the used car business. In his younger years, Max enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing and crabbing in the Chesapeake Bay. He had a lifelong fondness for horses and in the last years of his life spent his winters in Dade City, FL living beside a horse track where he could watch other "snowbirds" train and race their horses.
The funeral and burial will be private.
