Harold was born to Leslie Theodore Armstrong, (1879-1955) and Lula May (Ellis) Armstrong, (1880-1959). He had ten sisters and one brother. His great grandparents, Thomas Armstrong and Sarah Kernachan came from the Northern part of Ireland. Sarah born in Londonderry, but her father came across the River Foyle from Carrigans, Donegal. Thomas may have come from Co. Fermanagh. They met and married in Boston, then moved to Illinois. Harold and his brother, Clifford Lee, (1913-1993) moved the rest of the way crossing the country to California.
