OBITUARY :
GEORGE W. SMITH, 56 North avenue, died Tuesday night at 10:45 at the Washington County Hospital, following an emergency operation, aged 81 years. He became critically ill Sunday night and was taken to the hospital, where he underwent an appendectomy.

He resided in this city with his son, Luther H. Smith, since 1940. His wife, Annie M. Spencer, died in 1933.

Born and reared in Frederick county, the son of Henry K. and Mary Snuff Smith, he spent his early boyhood in Thurmont and in 1901 moved to Waynesboro where he resided until 1940. He retired from his farm in 1933. A member of the Trinity Evangelical Reformed Church, Waynesboro, and the Men's Bible Class, he was well-known in Hagerstown, Waynesboro and Thurmont.

He is survived by children, Elmer E., Waynesboro, Mrs. Linnie M, Pentz, Baltimore, Mrs. Bertha Heefner, this city, Luther, this city; sister, Mrs. Samuel Yingling, Waynesboro; 4 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2:30 from the Grove Funeral Home, Waynesboro, the Rev. George H. Bricker officiating. Interment in Burns Hill cemetery.
Friends may call this evening from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.
