Philip Lawrence Mayer, 70, of Cumberland died on Friday, December 31, 2004, at Luther Hospital in Eau Claire. He was born on March 11, 1934, in Stillwater, Minn., to Lawrence and Dorothy (Collins) Mayer. His family moved to Cumberland where he was raised.

Phil attended St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minn. He married Kathryn Callanan of Springfield, Minn., on November 3, 1956. He and Kathy eventually returned to Cumberland and raised their family. Phil was very active in the Cumberland community through the Chamber of Commerce, Jaycees, as parade announcer and school board member.

A very God-loving, giving and gracious man, he devoted himself to God and his family. He gifted his family with his faith, and it was his faith that gave him courage and carried him through his final days. He was very charitable and exemplified this in word and action as a confirmation teacher, Eucharistic minister of the homebound, 4th degree Knight of Columbus and volunteer driver for the Alzheimer’s association.

He leaves loving memories with his fiancée, Beverly Gournas; and surviving family members, four sons, James of St. Paul, Minn., Jay (Jill) Mayer of Eau Claire, Jeffrey (Elizabeth) Mayer of Lodi and Jonathan Mayer of Cumberland; three daughters, Jill (Bruce) Ellingson of St. Cloud, Minn., Jean Mayer of Crystal, Minn., and Jo (Darryl) Holmstrom of White Bear Lake, Minn.; 15 grandchildren, Zakariah Latzka of San Francisco, George Mayer of St. Paul., Minn., Jessica, Christopher, Cassandra and Jennifer Mayer of Eau Claire, Chance and Keana Mayer of Lodi, Michael, Patrick, Andrew, Kathryn and Stephen Ellingson of St. Cloud, Minn., and Jack and Helen Holmstrom of White Bear Lake, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathy on November 17, 1997.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, January 5, at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Spooner, with Fr. Andrew P. Ricci officiating. Interment will take place in St. Anthony Cemetery, Cumberland.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Scalzo-Taylor Funeral Home in Spooner, where there will be a 7:30 p.m. vigil service.
