Past Grand Master of Masons in Michigan (1887).

Rufus Claghorn Hatheway was born in the old town of Rochester, (now Marion), Plymouth County, Massachusetts, on December 21, 1837. He came with his parents to Michigan in 1849. He passed through his studies in school with credit, always one of the leaders in his numerous classes. He decided to become a seaman instead of going to college. He followed this profession for several years, and sailed in various parts of the world. At his mother's insistence, he abandoned that way of life, and returned to Michigan in the early 1850's. He joined his father in the lumber business in eastern Michigan. He continued in business with his father until 1865, when he moved to the western part of the state and began his own lumber business. He met with several severe losses from fire, the last time being in 1879. After that time he entered the real estate, insurance, and commission lumber business.

He married Miss Alma A. Sage, of Memphis, Michigan in 1860. She died in 1876. In 1883 he married Lizzie Innes. She was the daughter of Most Worshipful Grand Master William P. Innes (1892).
