Pioneer Resident Succumbs After Short Illness

Charles Henry Van Etten, 92, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Charles Schon, Jan. 7th, following a brief illness. He was born at Battle Creek, Michigan, September 22, 1851, the son of William and Hannah Van Etten. While still an infant, his parents returned to their former home in Syracuse, N. Y. A few years later the family came to Whitewater, Wis., living there for a while and then moving to Maple Plain, Minnesota, where they resided several years.

He was married to Elizabeth Louise Simmons, November 24, 1881, at Chippewa Falls, Wis. They came to Shell Lake in 1892, living on a farm in the Town of Bashaw for many years.

There were six children: two boys, Guy and Clifford, preceding their father in death. Surviving are his wife and four daughters, Mrs. Charles Schon, Shell Lake, Wisconsin; Mrs. Fred Keezer, Everett, Wash.; Mrs. Clarence Bush, Duluth, Minnesota; and Mrs. William Schon, Shell Lake, Wisconsin; besides six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the Raas Funeral Home at 2 o'clock, Jan. 10, Rev. G. R. Weaver, Duluth, officiating. Interment was in Shell Lake Cemetery.

From out of town attending the funeral were his nephew, E. D. Samson, Milwaukee; his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Bush, Duluth; three grandchildren, Mrs. Newell Trumbower, Tomah, Wis., Blaine Bush and James Bush, Duluth; Joseph Schon, Cable, Wis., and Harry Franklin, Superior.
