Before immigrating to the United States in 1867, John worked in Lincolnshire, England for local farmers. After coming to America, John settled down in Grant County, Wisconsin, spending his first few years in the Muscallonge vicinity becoming acquinted with Elizabeth Ellis. In 1875 he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Ellis where they then moved to a farm near Bloomington for a few years, then back to Beetown, living on a farm in Beetown Township.
