Carl Frank Frieders passed away on Dec. 16, 2012, at the age of 91.

He was born on Sept. 22, 1921, in Aurora, Ill., to Michael P. and Henrietta Winckler Frieders.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Anna M. Frieders; his brothers, Michael and Paul Frieders; and his sisters, Ruth Frieders (Christoffel) and Evelyn Frieders.

He is survived by his brother, Robert Frieders (Dottie); his sisters Lorraine Frieders and Mary Ann Ajo (Manny); his four children, Michael Frieders (Twila), Lorraine Glicksman (Elliot), Gloria Noble (Bill), and Raymond Frieders (Kelly); and eight grandchildren, Jill, Ben, Zach, Matt, Nick, Carly, Ally, and Drew.

Carl served his country in the US Army for 20 years, retiring as a Major in 1962. He embarked on a second career in Civil Service for the Strategic Communications Command (STRATCOM) at Fort Huachuca, Arizona, and resided in Sierra Vista, Arizona, from 1967 to 2009. In 1973, he was awarded the Meritorious Civilian Service Medal.

He retired from civil service after serving 20 years and went on to do wonderful things for Sierra Vista, the town that he loved so much. He served on the Sierra Vista City Council for several years and was Mayor of Sierra Vista in 1975 and from 1987 to 1991.

Carl was an avid walker and could be seen most mornings at 4:30 a.m. starting his long walk around the town and its outskirts, making his first stop at Starbucks and always stopping and checking in with friends along the way. He often painted over graffiti he found while on his walks. Graffiti abatement became his passion, and he single-handedly started the graffiti abatement program in Sierra Vista, volunteering as the city's graffiti abatement supervisor for over 15 years. He enlisted local community groups and retailers to help him in the effort.

Carl was also very active in many community organizations, including the Kiwanis Club, where he received its "Legion of Honor" certificate for 25 years of service; and the Carmichael Elementary School Board. He was also a prolific Red Cross donor. The city complex was dedicated to Carl in 2006 and named "Carl Frieders Civic Plaza" for his many years of service to the community. Carl was generous and had a kind word for everyone. He always said, "It doesn't cost anything to make someone's day!"

We would like to thank all the wonderful caregivers at Sunrise at River Road and Casa de la Luz Hospice for their wonderful support in his last days. Please honor his life with an act of kindness. Services will be held Thursday, December 20, 2012, at 11:30 a.m. at Hatfield Funeral Home in Sierra Vista.
