Son of Agnes Harper of Harper's Ferry, VA/WV (state borders changed) and James Donnelly, of Ireland, who had been a priest prior to his marriage. His father went back to Ireland to visit family then killed himself on the return voyage to the U.S. Husband of Alice Murphy (b.1819), father of Mary Jane Donnelly (b.1846), Agnes Donnelly (b.1848) , Alice Donnelly (b.1857) and Adah Blanche Donnelly (b.1859). James was a carpenter and the family lived on the North Side for many years before moving to Ohio for a while, where he worked as a contractor. According to his death certificate, James was a widower who had been a resident of the Home for Incurables in the 18th Ward of Pittsburgh for about a year and a half prior to his death. He was buried in Union Dale 4th Jan 1901.
