Florence - Home going services for Austin (Gene) Watson will be at 2 p.m. Monday, March 6, 2000 at Calvary Baptist Church, Florence. Burial will be at Florence Memorial Gardens with the Rev. W.L. Collins officiating. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home.
Mr. Watson died Saturday, March 4 in a Florence hospital after an extended illness. He was 71 years old.
Born on Oct. 8, 1928 to the late Luther B. and Cynthia Graham Watson in Loris, Mr. Watson was educated in Marion County public schools.
He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1946-1949. He was a retired sales representative and manager for Sealtest Foods and Flav-O-Rich. He also was a member of the VFW and the Fred H. Sexton American Legion Post No. 1. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed God's creation.
During Mr. Watson's debilitating illness, he was cared for by his loving and devoted wife, Iona (Mickey), with whom he was baptized in 1950 and spent 50 dedicated years. He also was ministered to by caring home health care and Mercy Transport personnel, Dr. Steven Ross and his staff, the youth and homebound ministry of Calvary Baptist Church and the students and teachers at the King's Academy of Florence.
He is survived by two loving daughters, Donna (Tommy) Doriety of Timmonsville and Terry (Gene) Robinson of Florence; sisters, Christine Bryant of Marion, Van (Jim) D'Amico of Fayetteville, Ga., Carolyn (Charlie) Hamer of Florence and Andy (Terry) Owens of Hemingway; brothers, Park (Annelle) Watson of Florence and Jack Watson of Santee. He was predeceased by brothers Rudolph and Blondell Watson.
Mr. Watson was blessed with seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren who loved him dearly and will miss him greatly: Kristy (Richie) Hughes, Austin (Christie) Doriety, Wesley (Ann) Doriety, Bradley Doriety, Justin Robinson, Clay Robinson and McLeod Robinson.
He also is survived by special nieces, Robin Jeffords of Florence, Patricia Ruedinger of Greer and Sayori Tidwell of Charleston.
Memorials may be made to the Calvary Baptist Church building fund or the charity of one's choice.
