June 20, 1924 - Humboldt Republican - James E Barker was born in Fredonia, NY in the year 1845. He graduated from business school in Buffalo, NY and at an early age was employed as a bookkeeper for large companies in the Pennsylvania oil fields.
At the time of the Civil War he was in the service of his country as express messenger, making many trips from the north to the south along the Mississippi river.
He was married to Mary S. Hart of Fulton, New York, July 22, 1868. They immediately came west and were among the early pioneers of Humboldt county, where they have resided ever since. He has been identified with early county office as clerk or deputy, and was a very efficient and capable officer. He served many years as City Cleric, City Assessor and secretary of the school board.
In his declining years, his hearing and eyesight becoming affected, he was forced to give up such duties and of late years has contented himself with the care of his garden and chickens in which he took unusual pride.
He passed away at his home on Monday, June 16, 1924, surrounded by those most dear to him. Those left of the immediate family are his wife, Mary S. Barker, two sons, Herbert H., of Hope, S.D., and Frank G. of Humboldt, and daughter, Mrs. Florence B. Fairman, of Humboldt.
Funeral services were held from the home on Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. G.B. Wilder, of the Congregational church, assisted by Mrs. T.G. Ferreby. Interment in Union cemetery.
