OLIVER, Velma "Joyce"
(Age 86)

Died January 25, 2011. Joyce was born November 16, 1924 to Agnes and Bill Sindelar in Laclede, a small community near Sandpoint, Idaho. She spent her early years in Dover, near Sandpoint, and graduated from Sandpoint High School in 1944.

Only a few months later, she married the love of her life and husband of 67 years, then 1st Lieutenant (U.S. Army) George S. Oliver. Joyce, as she was known to all, spent the next 30 years as "the best Army wife in the world," as her husband often called her.

As a young bride, she traveled across the U.S. on a train to join her husband to live in a bedroom with kitchen privileges. Joyce accompanied him on many of his assignments: two years in Japan, three years in Italy, and many U.S. locations including eight years in Washington, D.C., culminating in three years at Fort Richardson, Alaska.

When George retired in 1974, they moved to Anchorage and went no further -- but only when George agreed to annual trips to Hawaii in January (George kept that promise for the next 32 years). They also enjoyed a fish camp on the Kenai River for 25 years to accommodate their love of fishing. She is renowned on the Kenai Peninsula for her prowess for fishing; "All Fish Feared Her".

She loved to entertain, to open her home to one and all, she made everyone feel welcome. During the 1980s, she enjoyed working for the Anchorage School District, retiring in 1989. Her married life has been described in detail in her husband's autobiography, "The Tents" (www.thetents.US).

She is preceded in death by her parents, her sister Betty Ballou, and her identical twin sister Jean Oliver, of Spokane, who was married to George's twin brother Frank.

Joyce is survived by her sister Lorna Glazier Diebert of Sandpoint, Idaho, her husband George, her daughter Carolyn Oliver Uecker and husband Mike Uecker (Dayton, OH), her daughter Marilyn J. Smith (Sacred Heart Medical Center-27 years) and husband Wendell Smith (City of Spokane-32 years), her son George James (Jim) Oliver and wife Rita Leann, and her son Donald William (Skip) Oliver, wife Lori and granddaughter Abby Elizabeth, all of Anchorage, Alaska. Also survived by Jean and Frank's children Mindy Mellor her husband Mike, Kathy Powell and Bill Oliver all of Anchorage.

She passed away peacefully at the family home surrounded by extended family and friends. She will be missed by all who knew her. A Memorial Service will be held at 10 am on February 5th at Heritage Chapel in Spokane, burial to follow service at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.
