US Navy muster rolls show Charles assigned to the USS Medusa, a fleet repair ship serving in the Pacific, on 3 Feb 1941. The Medusa was attacked at Pearl Harbor on 7 Dec 1941 but sustained no loss of life. She went on to help down two Japanese planes and one midget submarine in the battle at Pearl Harbor.
Charles continued to serve on the Medusa until at least Dec 1946. He rose from the rank of Seaman First Class to BMC. The Medusa saw service during World War II in New Hebrides, New Guinea, Guadalcanal, Manus, Hollandia (where the crew serviced ships involved in the capture of Luzon), and Manila before returning stateside to help service layup ships. The USS Medusa was decommissioned in Nov 1947.
In 1948 and 1949 Charles was shown aboard the USS LST 542 (Tank Landing Ship), which served in the US Pacific Fleet.
In 1953 Charles was listed in the US Navy Cruise book aboard the USS Casa Grande, based at Norfolk and running exercises off the east coast, supply missions to Newfoundland and Greenland, and conducting amphibious training in the Caribbean.
