He enlisted Oct. 2, 1861, as a private in Co. A, 7th Texas Infantry at Marshall, TX. He was elected 5th Sgt, Nov. 10, 1861, while serving at a small pox hospital. On Feb. 16, 1862, he was captured at Ft. Donelson and sent to Camp Douglas, IL, then exchanged on Sept. 6, 1862 at Vicksburg, MS.
Now listed as 3rd Sgt., he was again captured on Nov. 30, 1864 at the Battle of Franklin and sent again to Camp Douglas, IL, where he was confined until being discharged on June 8, 1865.
The story goes that following the War, Martin was a traveling salesman, working in Mississippi, where he met and ran off with Keziah "Kitty" A. Williams Thompson, wife of John Henry Thompson, who had seven children from this marriage. Martin and Kitty took all of the children with them, except for the eldest son. They married sometime bet. 1866-1867 in MS and to this marriage five known children were born: Anna, Van F., John Reeves, Frank and Martha (Frank and Martha died in infancy)
1870 - They were living in Pike Co., MS, in 1880 Fannin Co., TX, in 1900 Tarrant Co., TX (Kitty died bef. the census was taken) and in 1910 Tillman Co., OK.
