Floyd Lee Vannatta Jr., 49, was driving east on Olive Highway when his 1998 Chevrolet pickup ran out of gas in a right-hand curve east of Foothill Boulevard, according to a California Highway Patrol press release. Vannatta and his passenger, Leonard M. Aguilar of Oroville, got out and worked to turn the vehicle around. Eventually, the pickup was stretched across the road, also known as Highway 162.
At about 6:05 a.m., Paul H. Brownfield of Red Bluff headed east into the curve with his 2008 Ford F150 pickup. Because of the darkness and the curve, Brownfield was unable to see the disabled vehicle until it was too late. Brownfield braked when he spotted Vannatta's truck, but he collided with the right rear of the stopped pickup.
The force of the crash pushed the disabled truck into Vannatta, causing major body trauma. Vannatta was declared dead at the scene.
