Sarah Melissa "Minnie" Perryman is believed to be the only daughter of Thomas Alexander "Alex" Perryman 1835–1919 and Elizabeth Kear 1838–1871. Her parents were married only briefly, with Elizabeth Kear quickly remarrying to Bradford Ogle.

Sarah Melissa "Minnie" Perryman's father Thomas Alexander "Alex" Perryman was the illegitimate son of Alexander McKissick Stinnett and Elizabeth Ide "Ibby" Perryman (a servant of Alexander McKissick Stinnett and his wife Elmira Ball). Alexander McKissick Stinnett had 2 illegitimate children with his servant Elizabeth Ide "Ibby" Perryman: Thomas Alexander Perryman and Stephen Perryman. Alexander was himself an illegitimate child, the son of Unknown McKissick and Elizabeth Wilkerson. Born with the name McKissick, he later took the surname of his stepfather, John Stinnett.

Sarah Melissa "Minnie" Perryman's family background has been passed down in the family and is substantiated by DNA matches of her granddaughter and several great-grandchildren. Specific DNA matches include matches to descendants of both Thomas Alender Perryman and his brother Stephen Perryman.

Sarah Melissa "Minnie" Perryman's headstone was placed in Snuffer Cemetery by her granddaughter Minnie Brown Rice. However, the will of Sarah Melissa "Minnie" Perryman Brown Cloyd was probated on Apr 9, 1928 in the name "Minnie Cloyd" with (her son) Tom Brown as Executor, making the date of death on the headstone incorrect. Also, the name Cloyd is not included on the headstone, for whatever reason.

Sarah Melissa "Minnie" Perryman married first to David Travis Brown, son of William Brown and Ary Young, on May 19, 1880 in Scott County, Tennessee. Together they had the following children:

Rosella Brown 1881–1900
Wade Hampton Brown (Twin) 1883–1963
William Thomas "Tom" Brown (Twin) 1883–1970
Margaret Elizabeth "Mag" Brown Seaton 1887–1970
Nettie Brown 1888–1889
Myrtle Brown Vance 1892–1937
Jack Perryman Brown 1896–1934
Olive Tea Brown 1899–1979

After the death of David Travis Brown, Minnie placed her two youngest children, Jack and Olive, in the Knight's of Pythias orphanage in Lexington Kentucky. This information was related by Olive's grandson. Her reason for placing her two youngest children in the orphanage is unknown.

Minnie married second to Rev. George Cloyd on April 5, 1919. George Cloyd was the son of John Preston & Harriet Orton Cloyd. He was a widower with several children. George is buried at the Cloyd Cemetery with his first wife and children.
