James served in the Civil War in the Fifteenth Ohio Volunteers. James' Military records state that he was in the battle of Shiloh, Seige of Corinth, Stonesriver & Hickory Gap. He was wounded at Liberty Gap, Tenn. The wound was a compound fracture of left thigh four inches below the hip and occurred on 24/25 June 1863. He died at the hospital in Murfreesboro, TN June 28,1863.

his remains were returned in a metallic casket and buried in the family plot.
