Benjamin Lancaster was born one mile east of Loretto, at "Viney Level" Washington (now Marion) County, KY to John and Catherine (Miles) Lancaster.

He married Ann Pottinger, 1805-1881, daughter of Samuel and Jenny (Caldwell) Pottinger, at St. Joseph Cathedral, Bardstown, Nelson County, Kentucky. He and Jenny were the parents of, at least : Samuel Pottinger Lancaster, 1831-xxxx; James Madison Lancaster, 1833-xxxx; Robert Lancaster, 1835-xxxx; and James M. Lancaster, 1838-xxxx.

His death resulted from being thrown from his horse while he was driving livestock.
