She was born March 26, 1915 at home, in Holmes County to Valentine and Pearl (Purdy) Mellor. In addition to being a twin, Birdell was one of 13 children. A graduate of Glenmont High School in Holmes County, she finished her nurses training (RN) at the Mansfield General Hospital School of Nursing in 1943.
She married Leland Addlesperger in 1943 and raised two children.
Birdell enjoyed reading, baking and sewing. She belonged to the FOREMS group of retired hospital employees and was in charge of making stuffed animals for the children in the emergency room for many years. She also belonged to the "Knotty Ladies" at the Lexington Church of the Cross where she made countless baby quilts. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family.
She is survived by her two children, John Addlesperger of Lexington, and Nancy Best (nee Addlesperger) of Olmstead Falls, her grandchildren Dr. Amy Best of Nashville, TN, Rebecca (Shannon) Baker and great grandson Joshua Baker of Stow. She is also survived by her sister Odessa Ferris of Millersburg and many nieces and nephews.
The Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home is serving the family, and a memorial service will be held in late March.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Troy Township Firefighters Association, 199 West Main Street, Lexington, Ohio 44904 or the Church of the Cross, 236 Otterbein Drive, Lexington, Ohio 44904.
