Maud May (Capehart) was born August 14, 1880 in Tilton, Iowa, the daughter of Henry "Lewis" and Mary Elizabeth (McBurney) Capehart.

On September 2, 1902, in Tilton, Iowa, Maud married Joel C. Harris, son of Joel R. & Samantha (Hollingsworth) Harris.

Joel & Maud immediately moved to Hand Co., South Dakota, where they established a homestead on the SE 1/4 of Sec 14 in Alden Twp., 11 miles north and 5 miles west of Miller. They lived in a small shanty until 1912, when a new house was built. A tornado struck the farm on June 5, 1925. Most of the buildings were blown down except for the house.

They were the parents of Inez (1903), Robert (1905), Lottie (1907), Joel C., Jr. (1912), Dorothy (1916), and Louise (1923).
