George was the son of George W Tillett and Mary A Cheney Tillett.

While living in Tipton, Cedar County, Iowa, George enlisted into the Union Army, Iowa 24th Infantry Regiment, Company B, as a Private, on August 4, 1862. He died in the service just three months later, on November 9, 1862.

His Regiment lost 9 officers and 119 enlisted men from combat and 3 officers and 212 enlisted men from disease or accidents.

"This regiment was organized at Camp Strong, near Muscatine, in the summer of 1862, under a call for an "Iowa Temperance Regiment," which brought a quick response from the temperance
people of the state, more men being offered than could be accepted. It was mustered in Sept. 18 and left the state Oct. 20 for St. Louis.

It passed the winter at Helena, Ark., engaging in short expeditions at intervals, and in Jan. 1863, moved in the White River expedition as far as Devall's Bluff."
