Miss Failing Dies at 85, Last of Pioneer Daughters

Miss Mary Forbush Failing, philanthropist and last of three daughters of Henry and Emily Phelps Corbett Failing, Portland pioneers, died at her home in Dunthorpe Sunday. She was 85.

Miss Failing's sisters, both of whom died before her, were Henrietta E. Failing and Mrs. Emily Failing Cabell, wife of the late Col. Henry C. Cabell. Their father was a pioneer merchant, financier, president of the First National bank and for three terms mayor of the city.

Miss Failing was born in Portland April 25, 1862, and was graduated from St. Helens Hall. She had lived in Dunthorpe since 1931 at 01679 S. W. Greenwood drive.

Mt. Vernon Interest

She was for many years the Oregon vice-regent on the board of the Mount Vernon Ladies association, which owns and maintains George Washington's home near Washington, D. C., as a public monument. At the time of her death she had been active in the organization longer than any of its other members.

She was a past president of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America Resident in the State of Oregon. She was at one time a director of the Library association of Portland. She always took and active part in the work of the Portland art museum. During both world wars she did much work for the Red Cross and for Bundles for Britain and has also been interested in the USO and other charitable and philanthropic organizations.

Her only close surviving relative is a nephew, Henry Failing Cabell. Cousins include Mrs. William L. Brewster, Miss Henrietta H. Failing, Mrs. Lucy Burpee, Mrs. E. H. Shepard, Mrs. Henry Ritz, Miss Rhoda D. Failing, Henry R. Failing, Miss Kate W. Failing, Miss Henretta C. Failing and John C. Failing, all of Portland, and Mrs. Horatio Smith, New York; Mrs. John Latta, Roseburg; Mrs. Winfield S. Lee, Washington D. C., and James E. Failing, Richmond, Va.

Funeral services will be at Miss Failings home Tuesday at 2 P.M. Interment will be at Riverview cemetery.

Bishop Benjamin D. Dagwell of the Episcopal diocese of Oregon will officiate at the final rites.
