GENE W. MEYER

Gene W. Meyer, age 60, of 11036 English Lake Road, Manitowoc, passed away Saturday morning, March 10, 2007, at Aurora Medical Center, Two Rivers, after a courageous battle with emphysema.

Gene was born on June 7, 1940, in Manitowoc, son of Clarence and Ovila Rautmann Meyer. He graduated from Valders High School with the class of 1958.

Gene served in the United Sates Navy from 1958 until 1962. On Nov. 20, 1965, he married the former Sally A. Olm at St. Gregory Catholic Church, St. Maziarz. He was employed with Reliance Construction Company from 1962 until 1967.

In 1967 Gene joined his wife Sally in the Olm family business of butter making. When Gene started work at Pine River Dairy some of his duties included truck driving, packaging butter, pasteurizing cream and picking up and disposing of whey for the local cheese factories.

Gene soon began to find himself in the position of butter maker after serving an apprenticeship with Don Johns, Pine River Dairy's resident butter maker of 30 years. Gene quickly mastered the trade and continued to be the chief butter maker for 20 years at Pine River Dairy. In 1998 Gene hung up his butter-making hat and moved up to the office where he continued to work part time until his retirement on Jan. 1, 2007.

Within two years of joining the family business Gene became a stockholder and co-owner of Pine River Dairy. Gene was a director and treasurer from 1977 until he became vice president in 1985. Gene held the vice president position for 18 years. Over the 40 years that Gene was at Pine River Dairy, his responsibilities included plant manager, research and development and quality assurance.

Gene also served as the vice president the Eastern Wisconsin Cheese and Butter Makers Association for 3 years, from 2000 through 2002. He was also on the auditing and nominating committee numerous times, and was awarded a lifetime membership into the Eastern Wisconsin Cheese and Butter Makers Association in November 2006.

Gene served on the Finance Committee at Gregory Catholic Church, St. Nazianz. He was a member of the Pigeon Lake Sportsman Club.

Survivors include his wife, Sally, Manitowoc; one daughter, Sue Meyer and friend, Scott Banaszak, Marinette; one brother and two sisters-in-law, Alan and Gladys Meyer, rural Valders, Doris Meyer, Manitowoc; Three sisters and brothers-in-law, Joyce Voight, Carpentersville,Ill., Bernice and Elwood Schneider, Valders, Marjorie and Ron Brueckman, rural Valders; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends and his special pet cat, Hannah.

Gene was preceded in death by one brother, Lloyd Meyer.

Funeral services will be held at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, March 13, 2007, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Clarks Mills. Officiating at the Memorial Mass will be the Rev. James Jugenheimer Cremation has taken place.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 3 p.m. until the time of Mass at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, March 13, 2007, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Clarks Mills.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the National Lung Association or the American Cancer Society.

The Christiansen & Dea Funeral Home is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
