After 82 years on this earth, the good Lord called Thomas D. "Tommy" Houston, Jr. home on December 28, 2012 at Memorial Health University in Savannah. He was surrounded by the family that he loved so dearly.

Tommy Houston, Jr. made his impact on this world and countless thousands of its people in so many ways. He served this great nation for over fifty-nine years as a soldier, civil servant and contractor. For Fort Stewart, his fifty year service legacy lives on for every soldier who sets foot on a range or trains to secure our nation. Tommy worked up to the day he went to the hospital at the age of eighty-two! He was a founding member of the National Association of Hazardous Materials Managers and was also a Registered Environmental Professional. Tommy was a fourth generation Master Mason for over fifty years and was a member and past master of Altamaha Lodge 227. He served his community as director in the Coastal Soil and Water Conservation District. Tommy was a Selectman Emeritus of the Midway Congregational Church and Society and was a member of the Society of Professional Military Engineers. Mr. Houston was a member of Ludowici United Methodist Church and the American Legion Post 168 in Hinesville.

He leaves behind his wife of 58 years, Margaret Houston of Ludowici; two sons and daughters-in-law, Roger and Erin Houston of Ludowici, Thomas III, LTC (R) US Army and Barb Houston of Castle Rock, Colorado and one of his greatest pleasures, a grandson Weyman. In addition, he leaves behind countless extended families made up of friends and colleagues that learned from him and allowed him to enrich their lives.

Visitation will be from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 30, 2012 at Howard & Jones Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, December 31, 2012 at the Ludowici United Methodist Church with Reverends Charles Houston and James Burgess officiating. Interment will follow in Baggs Cemetery with military honors.

Active Pallbearers will be Master Masons.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Walter Meeks, Buck Meeks, Al Theus, Tommy Hilliard, Cecil Stafford, Drew Brown, Billy Hickman and Tom Fry.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to The Altamaha Lodge # 227, 8 Macon Street, Ludowici, GA 31316 or Ludowici United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 460, Ludowici, GA 31316.
