Andrew A. Chapman was born on September 24,1847. He enlisted in 1864 in Richmond in the Artillery of French's Battery and spent his whole time guarding Richmond. He was in several battles, never wounded, and was present at the surrender of General Lee. After the war he attended college at Roanoke and Washington and Lee University. He studied medicine at two New York medical colleges. He practised medicine in Pearisburg and farmed this property. He married Anna Quarles West on December 18, 1872, in Petersburg City, Virginia, and had four children.

The death announcement of A. A, Chapman in the March 9, issue of the Sylvan Valley News reads:
"Mr. A. A. Chapman Dead. The subject of this notice was a stranger to the people of Brevard, having only recently moved into our town. He was the father of J. W. Chapman of the electric light plant and had been quite feeble for about three years. The Chapmans came here from Lawronsville [sic]. Ga.. where. we understand, the deceased had been for a number of years a successful practicing physician. The funeral was in charge of the Mason's and the internment was at Oak Grove cemetery this morning at 9 o'clock. We know but little of the family except that three of his sons are here in Brevard and will have employment connected with the electric plant. The family have the sincere sympathy of all in their bereavement."

The Directory of Deceased American Physicians, 1804-1929, that lists A. A. Chapman as having been an Allopath (A term sometimes applied to a physician who practices conventional medicine). JAMA Citation 46:975.
