Charles Edward Abbott was employed as an engineer at the Los Alamitos Sugar factory. He was engaged to Mabel Carter, daughter of a prominent orange grower in Ontario, California. The three of them died of botulism after eating pork and beans from a can in 1907. They had hiked Cucamonga Canyon so Charles would see snow for the first time in his life and they had planned a snow ball fight.
