Suggested edit:
A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted at the stated age of fourteen in Thompsontown, Juniata County, September 15, 1862, mustered into state service there as a private with Co. K, 18th Pennsylvania Militia, and honorably discharged with his company September 27, 1862, an experience as uneventful as it was brief. He is found in Bates History of Pennsylvania Volunteers and the Pennsylvania Archives' ARIAS file as "Everett Kepler," a likely clerical error. Given that he gave an honest enlistment age - albeit understating it by one year - suggests he had parental approval to enlist and had no reason to falsify his name.
2. Enlisted at the stated age of eighteen in Lancaster August 5, 1864, and mustered into federal service that day as a private with Co. A, 79th Pennsylvania Infantry. Contracting dysentery, he was hospitalized at U.S. Hospital No 8 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, then transferred to the medical facility at Jeffsonville, Indiana. It appears he performed little to no duty with the regiment but still discharged with his company July 12, 1865, near Alexandria, Virginia. The fact that he lied about his age suggests he did not have parental approval to enlist this time, which could explain why he went so far away to do it.
