GALT - Carl I. Portner, age 93, joined his departed wife and loved ones in heaven on Friday, Dec. 29, 2006.

Carl was born Jan. 16, 1913, to Martin H. and ImoJean (Little) Portner in Rock Falls. On Dec. 16, 1933, Carl was married to Vida M. Scott at the parsonage in Oregon, IL. Carl and Vida moved to her grandfather's house in Galt where they lived for 67 years, until her death on Feb. 10, 2002.

Carl was a great son, brother, husband, dad, grandfather and friend. Carl worked at Northwestern Steel and Wire for 20 years before he and Vida opened the Galt Rug Works, which they operated together for 30 years.

Carl is survived by two sons, David (Jean) Portner and Richard (Sandra) Portner; one daughter, Carol (Ron) George; and a granddaughter that was raised as a daughter, Lori (Alex) Estrada; eight grandchildren, Lizann (Dan) Williams, Wendy (Gary) Johnston, Martin Portner, Melissa (Scott) Griffis, Ronni (Tracey) Zeigler, Christopher (Chasity) George, Joey Estrada and Jessie Estrada; eight great-grandchildren, Dee (Ben) Burdick, Sandra (John) Peterson, Erik and Leigha Johnston, Peyton and Justin Zeigler and Zac and Jordon Grifffis; five great-great-grandchildren, Shadow, Brooke and Tasminda Burdick and Elizabeth and Camielle Peterson; one stepgrandson, Tony (Jill) Sosi; two step-great-grandsons, Luigi Sosi and Parker George; and one step-great-grandaughter, Anna Sosi.

Carl was preceded in death by two daughters, Juanita in March 2001 and Sheryl in infancy; his parents, Martin and ImoJean (Little) Portner; and one brother, Harold Portner.

Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2007, at First Christian Church of Rock Falls, 506 Fifth Ave. A full service will be at 10 a.m.

A memorial has been established to First Christian Church of Rock Falls. Interment will be in Coloma Cemetery, Rock Falls, IL. Arrangements were completed by McDonald-Allen-Grennan Funeral Home, Sterling.
