In 1920, Robert worked at the Baltimore Dry Dock and lived with his sister Amelia and her husband Raymond Crocker at 4809 Delaware Av. Just one month prior to his 19th birthday, Robert enlisted in the U.S. Navy. (His tombstone incorrectly lists this period of service as WWI.) Following his honorable discharge seven months later, he returned to his job at the Baltimore Drydock for several years. By 1940, he was living at 1109 Sargeant St with his sister Ina and her husband Ray Ogden.
At the outset of WWII, Robert was in his late 30's and was characterized as an "old man" for purposes of the draft, and was not called to serve. He chose to enlist, and joined the Army on 3 Oct 1942, at the age of 40. He served for 5 months in the Anti-Tank Corps of the 17th Infantry.
Robert died on 5 February 1959. The family applied to the U. S. Veterans' Administration for a headstone. The notes appearing on the paperwork illustrate the great care taken by the VA and the Department of the Army to ensure that service in both the Army and Navy was recorded. Robert is buried next to his parents and grandparents, in the Brehm family plot at Loudon Park Cemetery.
