Second Lieutenant Joseph Caldwell was killed at the Battle of Fort Gregg on April 2, 1865. After color bearer Private Joseph Logsdon was killed, Lieutenant Caldwell seized the regimental colors and scurried to the top of the parapet. While planting the flag, he was killed by the thrust of a bayonet and fell back into the ditch which surrounded the fort. Private Logsdon and Lieutenant Caldwell are buried next to each other at Poplar Grove National Cemetery.

Joseph Caldwell, age 24, mustered into service on August 16, 1862, as sergeant with Co. A, 12th West Virginia Infantry. He was wounded at the Battle of Winchester, July 24, 1864. Sergeant Caldwell was promoted to Second Lieutenant on December 16, 1864, and subsequently transferred to Company C.

Joseph Caldwell was born in 1837 in Marshall Co., WV, the son of John Caldwell & Jane Poole. He lived at Little Grave Creek. On October 23, 1856, he married Rebecca Jones in Marshall Co. Rebecca Jones was born in 1836 in Wood Hill, Marshall Co., WV. She was the daughter of Phillip and Jane Jones.

Joseph and Rebecca (Jones) Caldwell had the following children, all born in Marshall Co., WV: George H. Caldwell, born 1855; Mary A Caldwell, born 1857; Lydia Caldwell, born in 1859 (married Charles Riggs) and Emma C. (married M. Ellsworth Riggs, brother of Charles).

Grand Army of the Republic Post #22 (originally Post #21) in Moundsvillw, WV, was named in his honor, the J. C. Caldwell Post.
