Erasmus Lee Clark was the oldest child of Mark Lowery and Mary Catherine Gardenhire Clark. Lee grew up with four sisters and was the only son of a prominent Sparta, Tennessee family. He was named after his mother's father, Judge Erasmus Lee Gardenhire. Erasmus Lee Clark was an attorney.

He married Annie Fain on 3 September 1896. Their first child, Waman, was born in June of the following year. Erasmus Lee Clark died in 1898, shortly before the birth of their second child and daughter, Sammie Fain Clark Sims.

His obituary in the Cookville Press, provides information. "E. L. Clark died at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Clark, last Thursday morning at 3:15 a. m. Death overtook this young man suddenly. He took his bed Sunday, suffering from an acute attack of kidney disease, complicated with heart trouble. His death is an extremely sad one. An unusually fine specimen of manhood, when in health, a kind hearted and accommodating young man. His death comes as a sudden shock, although for some months it could be seen that he was wasting away under the influence of a rapidly encroaching and deadly disease.
