Mrs. Smith resided in Grand Prairie with her daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Neal Pope.
The Rev. Floyd Gaston officiated and William Vaught, longtime family friend, shared memories of Ms. Smith. Burial was in Atoy Cemetery.
Mrs. Smith died Jan. 3 in Baylor Irving Hospital in Irving. She retired from Rusk State Hospital and started her quilting business, Margaret's Machine Quilting. She was featured twice in the Cherokee County Co-Op magazine.
Mrs. Smith was born July 6, 1921, in Palestine.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Mary Eva Rice; three sons, Leroy Helm, Waylon Helm and William Arthur Helm; a daughter, Mary Jane Helm; a brother and six sisters.
Survivors include three daughters, Joyce Harlan of Atlanta, Ga., Sharon Pope and son-in-law, Neal Pope of Grand Prairie and Nancy Adams of Jacksonville; daughter-in-law, Dolores Helm of Grand Prairie; brother, Coy Rice and sister-in-law Alice Rice of Athens; sister-in-law, Mary Helm of Alto; nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and longtime friends, Lois Mims of Jacksonville and Rita Wiggins of Rusk.
Grandsons Dennis Lusk, Jason Helm, Roger Pope, Shawn Pope, Bryan Helm and Jeffrey Helm served as pallbearers.
