John Lewis Bryant was born in South Carolina and moved to what is now Covington county, MS. about 1808 and founded a settlement between the Leaf and Talahala Rivers. He served in the War of 1812. He returned to South Carolina to bring other settlers to Mississippi and on the way back was surrounded by Indians and was stomped to death about 1832.
