Dorothy A. Schaad, 87, of Waterford, Ohio, died Wednesday (Jan. 2, 2013) at Muskingum Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation in Beverly. She was born Dec. 26, 1925 in Marietta, daughter of Paul and Carolyn Bailey Schmidt.
She was a loving mother and homemaker. She graduated from St. Mary's High School in Marietta in 1943. In her early years she had been secretary for former Governor William O'Neil and was clerk for the Village of Stockport. She was a member of St. Bernard Catholic Church, Catholic Women's Club, president of the Stockport Child Conservation League, The Total Ministry Program of the Steubenville Diocese and the NFO for over 40 years. Dorothy knitted an afghan for every child and grandchild's wedding. She donated an afghan to the annual NFO banquet raffle for the past 25 years. Dorothy loved the game of scrabble and handed down the fun to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren!
Dorothy had a beautiful voice and shared her talent with church and community. Her faithfulness to God, husband, family, and the family farm was a pillar for the community church and country. Dorothy's vocation in life was alive and active, as witnessed by her constant donations to the poor, her tireless labors of love, and her relentless devotion to prayer, and her proud patriotism. Her prayers and leadership in prayer meetings changed the lives of countless. Her service to others was quiet and humble, often unnoticed, where sleep and comforts were sacrificed. She treated her 13 children as if each were an only. Her love had no boundaries?. exampled at the supper table, where most often extra mouths were fed, but Dorothy was always the last to sit down, and ate little. Her dedication to her husband, Earl gave great witness and hope to married couples. Dorothy followed the way of Jesus in how she lived, served and loved. Her final years of life held tremendous suffering versus an active lifestyle?. so as a parallel to the life of Christ. This suffering servant offered her sufferings, for the purpose of The Cross and the salvation of souls throughout the world. We all truly have a new saint in heaven, who continues to pray for us!

Also surviving are 13 children: Christopher Schaad and wife Linda of Dale, Allana Salimbene and husband John of Columbus, Theresa Kimbrel and husband Ron of LaVita, Colo., Jim Schaad, Paul Schaad and Joe Schaad and wife Janice of Waterford, Dan Schaad of Lake Charles, La., Bill Schaad and wife Janet of Dallas, Texas, Bob Schaad and wife Meg of Willmington, Ohio, Carolyn Plummer of Waterford, Sarah Seeke and husband Tom of Marquette, Mich., Frank Schaad and wife Susan of Richmond, Va. and Patrick Schaad of Lake Charles, La.; 34 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren; a sister, Carol Patterson and husband Dave of Houston, Texas; a sister in law, Charlyn Schmidt of Williamstown.
She was preceded in death by her parents; infant son, Michael Schaad; two brothers, Jim and Ben Schmidt; and a son in law, Michael Plummer.
Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, at St. Bernard Catholic Church with Monsignor Robert Kawa officiating. Burial will be in St. Bernard Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. on Sunday at McCurdy Funeral Home in Beverly. Praise and worship songs will be at 8 p.m. Sunday with a Rosary service to follow.
