Donald M. Adams, 78, of Rutland Town, passed away peacefully on January 2, 2012, at Our House Outback in Rutland following a lengthy and courageous battle against multiple sclerosis. Don had been cared for by the very kind, loving and dedicated staff at Our House Outback up until his passing.

Don was born in Rutland, VT, on November 27, 1934, to John H. and Regina L. Adams.

Don attended Christ the King School, and later Mount Saint Joseph Academy, graduating in 1953.

Don wanted to serve his country and enlisted in the United States Navy in 1954, serving during the Korean War aboard the AO55 United States Elokomin. He served for five years.

While serving his country in 1956, he married the love of his life, Jeanne McNeil Adams. Together they shared a special marriage of 56 years.

Upon being honorably discharged from the Navy in 1959, he returned home and went to work for the Allstate Insurance Company for several years. He later accepted a position with the National Grange Mutual Insurance Company, working as an insurance underwriter covering the entire state of Pennsylvania. He worked there for approximately 18 years.

In 1974, hearing the news that the National Grange was moving its Rutland office to Keene, N.H., he took a chance and started his own insurance agency, Adams Insurance Agency, with the intent of staying small and always providing the best service possible to his customers. The former did not happen, as word of mouth grew the business by customers who appreciated his honest, service-related approach and the latter always remained as a successful mission statement.

As the business grew, Don purchased several other insurance agencies including the Alma Borden and Joe Czachor agencies. Working alongside his wife Jeanne and son Don Jr., this growth required the hiring of several dedicated employees, who, together as a team, remained true to providing the best service possible from an independent agency for over 25 years. Due to the respect and credibility he earned while conducting business, Don was asked to serve as an advisory consultant to his main carrier, The Concord General Mutual Insurance Company. The family business was sold to Poulos Insurance in 2003.

Don enjoyed a variety of hobbies including playing cards, spending time at camp, fishing and photography. He rarely traveled anywhere without his camera and took hundreds of photos of family, friends and scenic outdoor settings. He also was a passionate, loyal fan of the Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots and Boston Bruins.

Don also enjoyed reminiscing with family and friends about his time in the Navy, various family functions over the years, and his experiences in the business world.

Don was a longtime member of B.P.O.E., Elks Lodge #345 and American Legion Post 31. Don was also a former third-degree member of the Knights of Columbus and The Loyal Order of Moose.

Don's life was built upon a strong commitment to faith, family and service. He was known for his great sense of humor, strong sense of honesty and integrity, and resilient work ethic.

He was predeceased by his father John H. Adams, mother Regina L. Adams, a sister Rosemary Adams Hebert, and brothers John Adams, Monsignor Raymond Adams, Robert Adams and Francis Adams.

Don is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Jeanne McNeil Adams, a son Donald M. Adams Jr. and his wife Carol of Rutland, a daughter Therese M. Baker of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and grandsons Brent Adams and Christopher Adams of Rutland, VT, and Chad Baker and Ryan Baker of Saratoga Springs, N.Y. Don also leaves behind several nieces and nephews.

Don also enjoyed many life-long friendships, including companionships with his adopted brother Bill Duffy of Marlboro, MA, Mike Blanchard of Pittsford, VT and Tom Terenzini of Rutland Town, VT, among others.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, January 7, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Christ the King Church in Rutland.

Officiating will be the Rev. James Dodson, Parochial Vicar. A reception will follow.

Calling hours will be held at Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland on Sunday, January 6, 2013, from 1 to 4 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society or the Mount Saint Joseph Academy Development Fund, in care of Clifford Funeral Home, 2 Washington Street, Rutland, VT 05701.
