His trade was that of a painter and paper hanger. Later in life he also painted buggies etc., and pin striped them free hand. He died in Colorado Springs, Colorado while visiting his sister Florence Kynett Paulus. He had drank some water that was apparently tainted. Willard Lee Kynett his son who also lived in Lisbon, Iowa made the trip to Colorado Springs by train and brought the body of his father James back to Lisbon for burial in the Lisbon cemetery.
