George was the oldest of the three surviving children of John Anderson Tolbert and Edith Ann (Marcus) Tolbert. Two siblings had died between the 1900 and 1910 censuses.

His surviving siblings were:

George's obituary was published in the Sikeston MO "Standard" of Friday, 9 February 1931, page 8:

EX-SOLDIER SUCCUMBS AFTER LONG ILLNESS

George Tolbert, of this city, died last Monday in Little Rock, Ark., following an illness dating to service in the late World War, where he saw thirteen months of active service. He was gassed during one encounter and never fully regained his health, although he spent months in various government hospitals.

Mr. Tolbert was born in Eddyville, Ky., February 15, 1895 and died October 5, 1931, at the age of 36 years, 4 months and 16 days. The body arrived in Sikeston Wednesday morning being taken to the Welsh Funeral Parlor before its removal to the home of his mother, Mrs. Edith Tolbert, in northwest Sikeston, where funeral services were conducted that afternoon at 2:30 o'clock by Rev. Ernst. Interment was made in the Sikeston City Cemetery with Welsh in charge.

Surviving besides his mother are one brother, Kelly Tolbert and one sister, Mrs. Bernice Wallace, both of Sikeston.

Tolbert enlisted in the army and served 13 months overseas. Recent weeks wee spent in Hot Springs, Ar., and in the Little Rock institution, where he died.
