Slight of build, Luther Montrose Carlton, Jr. was born in or near Roxboro, Person Co., NC in 1912. Roxboro is a rural town in Person county N.C. and the only municipality in the county. Luther Jr. worked as a semiskilled textile employee there when he enlisted in the US Army on April 15, 1941, at Ft. Jackson, SC. His Army serial number was 34091102. He was single but had one year of college to his credit.

He eventually became a Warrant Officer in the Army and was assigned to the 455th AAA Bn. HQ as the Assistant S-4 (Ammunition Supply Officer). The unit had trained at Camp Stewart & Ft. Benning, Ga. and went to Europe in Sept. 1943 to guard an American airbase at Watton, England. The 455th crossed to France in July 1944 for its role in "Operation Cobra" and was assigned to Patton's Third Army, Walker's XX Corps and participated in the drive across France and Germany, and into Austria at the end of the War.

When the War ended in 1945, Carlton would return home to "Main St., Roxboro, NC" according to 455th records. Unfortunately, he would not live long after the War, dying on Halloween, 1948, aged 36 yrs. His obituary shows him dying in hospital in Arlington, VA. He 'had been in declining health' for many months and his death was 'due to complications'...

The obituary also indicated that he had been married at some point and had a son, Donald Carlton.
