The following was written by Leah Joann Spruiel, great great great grandaughter of John Washington Spruiell: " My great great great great grandparents were Hiram Spruiell and Lucinda Harton, and they were from Tyrell County, North Carolina. They had four children, named John Washington, Sarah Ann, Luke, and Napolean, the eldest being my great great great grandfather, John Washington. John fought in the War between the States for the Confederacy. He was in the 16th Alabama Infantry, Company K, known as a sharp shooter regiment, meaning they specialized in shooting long range targets. He fought in the Battle of Shiloh, Battle of Chickamauga, and the Battle of Atlanta. In September 1864 at the battle of Jonesboro he was shot in the left hip. He was in a sage field and would have burned up if his cousin named James Van Buren Crump had not pulled him out of the burning field. He was recovering in an an army hospital when his brother brought a buck board wagon to the hospital and carried him home. After the war John and Luke helped their father on the farm. The 1870 census records indicate a black farm hand named Janie having a 2 year old child named Clifton, who was a mixed child. The story goes that the father was John of Luke. John married Amanda Pope, my great great great grandmother, and they had five children. Their childrens names were Florence, Ursula, Leander "Lee", Claudia Hester, and Thomas Newton, my great great grandfather. When Amanda died he married Arminta "Mintie" Seaborn and they had four children named Rosever, Virginia "Fuzz", John"Booze" and William. When Tom and Lee were little they were jumping on the bed which made Mintie very angry. She told John, their father, that they had to be sent away. They got into an argument but eventually the boys were sent away. They found work at the Stuckey farm and lived there. Thomas Newton was married to Mary Amm "Mollie" Stuckey on December 5 1897. Thomas and Mollie had ten children: Andrew Eldridge, Dewey Mills, Laura Estelle, Marless Earley, Roy Eldred, Johnnie James, Thomas Elton, Lawrence Dee, Mary Lou, and Luther Wages. Andrew, Dewey, Marless, and Lawrence all died before they were two years old."
