From Boston Evening Transcript, Boston, Massachusetts ,Saturday, August 14, 1886, Page 2 , column 4:
"Recent Deaths
Colonel William Kent, well known as a prominent citizen of New Hampshire, and for many years connected with the Boston Custom House, died at Cromwell, Conn., Thursday. He was born in Concord, N.H., April 2, 1793, and was graduated at Atkinson's Academy. For many years he was in the hardware business in Concord, but retired in 1840. For thirteen years he was clerk in the naval office of the Boston Custom House, resigning at the age of eighty, when he was succeeded by his son Fred, who still remains as clerk in the same department. His title was gained by a command he held in the New Hampshire Militia. When Lafayette visited Concord Colonel Kent commanded the troops, and it was at the house of his father, Hon. William A. Kent, that the distinguished Frenchman stopped. Colonel Kent was an intimate friend of Daniel Webster, and the latter when in Concord made his headquarters at the old Kent mansion. The deceased was a brother of ex-Governor Edward Kent of Maine and of Hon. George Kent, formerly of Washington, D.C., while he was also a relative of Henry O. Kent, the present naval officer of the port of Boston."

From The Boston Daily Globe, Boston, Massachusetts ,Saturday, August 14, 1886, Page 4 , column 4:
"Colonel William Kent
The death of William Kent, late of Concord, N.H., at the age of 93, removes the last of a group of brothers, of whom the late Governor Edward Kent of Maine was the most conspicuous. In a long mercantile life in Concord, in a connection of several years with the Boston Custom House, and in the later period of retirement, Mr. Kent, by his integrity, faithfulness and geniality, won the confidence and affection of his business associates and a wide circle of friends. His title came from a commission in the New Hampshire militia, and he was in command of the troops that welcomed Lafayette to Concord, while his father's house received the marquis as a guest. On his mother's side Colonel Kent was a nephew of the late Chief Justice Prentiss Mellen of Maine."
