Longtime Payson resident Floyd T. Landers passed away peacefully at his home of 43 years on Dec. 5, 2012 at the age of 93.
Mr. Landers was born Dec. 20, 1918 in Potawatomie County, Okla. He was one of eight children.
As a child he lived through the Dust Bowl years in Oklahoma. As a teenager he worked at a C.C.C. camp in Northern California, building Calaveras Big Trees State Park. As a young man, along with three brothers, he fought bravely in World War II. He earned five medals including the Purple Heart.
After recovering from his injuries he received an honorable discharge and was taught a trade to use in civilian life. He worked in the welding shop at Tinker Air Force Base until moving his family to Arizona in the 1950s. He then worked at Luke Air Force Base until he retired from civil service. He bought the Standard Station in Cashion and worked there until moving to Payson in 1967.
He's best remembered locally as the owner of several service stations and lastly as the man who repaired radiators on East Bonita until his retirement in 1999.
After retirement, Mr. Landers enjoyed being at the casino with friends and spending time with his family and friends in his home.
His parents, six siblings, two wives and one son preceded him in death. He is survived by two children, Larry Landers (Pam) of Arlington, Ariz. and Lisa Boyle (Craig), of Payson; as well as eight grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren; and a precious gray tabby cat that he loved dearly.
A service will be held in Mr. Landers' honor at 1 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 29 at Payson Pioneer Cemetery.
