NEWPORT NEWS - Brayden Joseph Whalen, 5 months old, passed away Saturday, January 5, 2013.

Private funeral arrangements were handled by Altmeyer Funeral Home, Denbigh Chapel.

HAMPTON-- A Hampton man faces homicide charges after a six-month-old baby died Saturday from injuries suffered in an alleged assault.

Brayden Joseph Whalen died Saturday at a local hospital. Police say the baby was assaulted on Dec. 29.

Brayden's mother and her boyfriend, both of Andros Isle in Hampton, were arrested Jan. 1.

Daniel Lunsford, 21, (a U.S. Navy Sailor) has been charged with homicide, felony child abuse and failure to secure medical attention.

Brittany Whalen, 20, has been charged with felony child abuse and failure to secure medical attention.

On Jan. 1, Hampton Fire and Rescue were notified of a baby suffering from a medical condition. They responded and transported Brayden to a local hospital where he later died.

Both suspects remain in custody at the Hampton City Jail.

Brayden Joseph Whalen died Saturday at a local hospital. Police say the baby was assaulted on Dec. 29.
