Grace Meredyth Lovegrove, 18, collapsed Monday, January 10, 2005 doing what she loved best, running with her Christopher Newport teammates and friends in Newport News. She fought hard but never regained consciousness, and she died on Wednesday, January 12, 2005. Grace was a beautiful, vibrant person who dearly loved people and life. She also loved drawing, poetry, singing, and dancing (usually while waiting for people to reply to her instant messages). She couldn't do without her cats, candy, or Cheerwine soda. An honor student in high school and a member of the French Honor Society and Beta Club, Grace continued to do well at CNU, making the Dean's List in her first semester. Although running was her first love, she also played softball for seven years, mainly as a pitcher. Inspired by her Uncle David (and the fact she could outrun just about everybody else in elementary school), Grace took up track in middle school and was city champion in the 800 and 1600 in 8th grade. Under the guidance of coaches Butch Lewis, Chad Cox, and James Earl Jones, she continued running in high school, earning 12 varsity letters in cross country and indoor and outdoor track. She decided to attend CNU to study marine biology and because she immediately felt a kinship with the members and coaches of the cross country team when she visited the campus. During her first semester, she established strong friendships on the team and in the dorm. Grace was also an active member of Rosalind Hills Baptist Church Youth. She enjoyed Joy Explosion and mission tours, and was a counselor for youth camp. Grace was always a giving person, and she continued that to the end by being an organ donor. All who have known Grace well were enriched by her free spirit. Her stay here was too short and her departure leaves a hole in our lives. She was our baby girl. Now she's running like she's never run before.
