Enlisted on 23 Jul 1862 into the 121st New York Volunteer Infantry at Cherry Valley, where he had been a merchant. Mustered into Capt. Douglas Campbell's Co. E. on 23 August 1862 at Camp Schuyler.
Saw some action at Antietem and then was in the battle in the attempt to take Fredericksburg, Virginia. The federal troops were driven back and the 121st N.Y. went into winter camp across the Rappahannock River from Fredericksburg in Stafford County at White Oak Church. Not known why he was discharged, probably a medical discharge, by order of General Franklin on 12 January 1863.
