Donald Eugene Balaun was born May 19,1923, to Arthur and Helen G. Hallock Balaun on a farm southeast of Salina. In the late 1950's he and his wife purchased a farm on the Smolan Road south of Salina. Preferring to remain in his home, he received full time health care from an exceptional group of people and left this life November 7, 2012 with his family at his side. He was a farmer for 62 years.

He was baptized and attended Sunday school at the University Methodist Church. He attended Magnolia School, went to South Park Grade School and later graduated from Washington High School in Salina.

He played in the American Legion Drum and Bugle Corps for many years and was a member of the American Legion Post. He attended Kansas Wesleyan University a short time before he was drafted into the Armed Forces. He was assigned to the Occupation Forces in the Pacific Theater with the 8th Army.

He married Norma Lea Cochran on March 9,1946. They had two children, Katherine S. Lysell (Balaun) and Steven A. Balaun.

He served on the Board of Magnolia School District 77 for many years. A member of the Saline County Farm Bureau for nine years. He and Norma and son, Steven, and his family were named "Farm Family of the Year" in 2001. Don also served on the boards of University Methodist Church and Mentor United Methodist Church.

Don was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Marjorie Goodwin.

He is survived by his wife Norma of the home; daughter, Katherine (Larry) Lysell, son Steven (Jane) Balaun, both of Salina, brother, James (Carol) Balaun, of Cleveland, GA, four grandchildren, Mija (Shawn) Stockman of Lindsborg. Mauri (Paul) Courter, Nortonville, Jenny and Courtney Balaun of Salina., five great-grandchildren, Eryn Brynne and Taylor Stockman and Kieran and Lauren Courter and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Don's life will be held at 3:30 p.m., Saturday, November 10, 2012 at the Mentor United Methodist Church. Mentor. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday, November 9, 2012 and the family will receive friends from 6-8 at Ryan Mortuary.

The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Mentor United Methodist Church or Harden Hospice of Kansas, left care of Ryan Mortuary, Salina, KS. 67401
