She was a maid for a wealthy man, Wyatt Nonn Williams. After his first wife died, they were married. Apparently, his children from his first marriage resented this and when he died, they cheated her out of his estate. She was illiterate and couldn't read the will. However, they did set her up with a home and took care of her financially until she died.
