HOUSTON, TEXAS - Verna Lee 'Dee' or 'DeeDee' White Smith, 93, died Monday, June 6, 2011, in Houston, Texas. She was born in Elizabeth City County now known as Hampton. Verna was a devoted wife and gave up her RN career to raise her three sons. Her husband, Paul "Pinky" Smith, was a marine surveyor and they lived and worked in port towns from Newport News, Va., to Yokohama, Japan. She and Pinky were avid Bridge players and were THE couple to watch on the dance floor when Swing was King. She enjoyed tracing her genealogy and was a member of Daughters of the Revolution and the de la Warre Chapter of the National Society of Colonial Dames. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul "Pinky" Smith; her parents, James A. White and Verna Lee Saunders White; and her four brothers, Saunders, James, Millard and Kimber White. She is survived by her three sons, Paul, Bob and Bill Smith; and six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 13, 2011, at Greenlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association .
