U.S. Senator. Moving with his family to California, in 1869, he was deputy United States Marshal in Los Angeles, (1888-92) and appointed clerk in the district attorney’s office, in 1892. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1892 and commenced to practice law in Los Angeles. He was assistant United States Attorney, (1892-93), judge of the superior court of Los Angeles County, (1895-97) and United States District Attorney for the southern district of California, (1897-1901). In 1905, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate, serving until 1911. Not a candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice and was a member of the California State land settlement board, (1917-26). He died at age 66 while on board a steam ship on a world tour.
