Company I, 41st Virginia Infantry, Weisiger's Brigade, Mahone's Division, 3rd Corps, Army of Northern Virginia, C.S.A.


Residence: Nansemond County, VA.; 5'9"; dark complexion, dark hair, black eyes.

Enlisted on 4/18/1861 in Norfolk, VA, he was mustered into (1st) Company H, 16th Virginia Infantry, as a Private.

On 7/22/1861 he was transferred into his brother Captain Robert Brinkley's Company, 41st Virginia Infantry, as 1st Sergeant. (This company subsequently became Company I, 41st Virginia Infantry.)

Listed on March & April 1862 Roll as having Re-enlisted for the duration of the war.

Elected 2nd Lieutenant 5/1/1862, Commanding company.

Present or accounted for on all Rolls from enlistment until Wounded In Action (gunshot wound of left hand) 7/1/1862 in Battle of Malvern Hill, VA (part of Seven Days' Battles); hospitalized 7/2/1862 in C.S.A. General Hospital #7, Richmond, VA; given 30-day Medical Furlough 7/19/1862.

Present on all subsequent Rolls until 7/21/1863 when admitted into C.S.A. General Hospital #4, Richmond, VA, with chronic diarrhea; transferred to another hospital 7/30/1862, released.

POW 9/1/1863 while recuperating at home in Nansemond County, VA; confined 9/22/1863 Fort Norfolk, VA; confined 9/24/1863 in Old Capitol Prison, Washington, DC; sent 11/11/1863 to Johnson's Island, OH, arriving there 11/14/1863; transferred to Baltimore, MD 2/9/1864; confined 2/15/1864 in Point Lookout, MD; confined 6/25/1864 Fort Delaware, DE; exchanged 7/10/1864.

POW 7/15/1864 in Petersburg, VA; confined in Fort Delaware, DE; released from there 6/12/1865.


[Erroneously listed as dying in Ft.Delaware on 12/26/64. While there, he changed places with another man, probably 3rd LT Richard W.Heath, Company G, 41st Virginia Infantry; Heath is probably buried under Brinkley's name at Finn's Point National Cemetery, NJ.]


The 41st Virginia Infantry Regiment completed its organization in July, 1861. Men of this unit were recruited in Petersburg and Sussex, Chesterfield, Norfolk, and Nansemond counties.
