About eleven o'clock last evening H. C. Jewell, father of H. A. Jewell and Mrs. Edgar P. Sawyer, died at bis home in the town West Algoma, from the effects of a paralytic stroke.
Mr. Jewell was one of the earliest settlers in this locality, having come here in 1848, and engaged in the mercantile and lumber business. He has held many offices of trust. having been alderman from the Fifth ward for a number of years and served as mayor of the city in 1862. In 1867 he was a member of the legislature. For eight terms he was a member of the county board.
His pioneer life in the town of Algoma is a part of the history of that section and many yet live to bear testimony to his sterling integrity in business life. In 1849 a post office was established at Algoma, and Mr. Jewell was appointed postmaster.
This position he held with credit for many years.
His death removes from Winnebago county another of its best men. The funeral will be held from the residence in the town of West Algoma Friday afternoon at two o'clock, the Rev. E. H. Smith of the First Congregational church officiating.
